Staging “Griselda” today means refusing the idea that a woman who has suffered violence should return to her husband. In my production, she no longer submits: she takes back her power and chooses freedom. I wanted to connect this reimagined ending with the reality of domestic violence, which still affects too many women worldwide. With the support of the Royal Danish Opera and the Danner Foundation, I invited the exhibition “Save My Sister” into the foyer, giving voice to women who have broken free. Their strength and courage inspired the final scene, where Griselda steps into a new life.

Monter “Griselda” aujourd’hui, c’est refuser qu’une femme victime de violences retourne auprès de son mari. Dans ma mise en scène, elle ne subit plus : elle reprend le pouvoir et choisit sa liberté. J’ai voulu relier cette relecture à la réalité de la violence conjugale, qui touche encore trop de femmes dans le monde. Avec le soutien de l’Opéra royal du Danemark et de la fondation Danner, j’ai invité l’exposition « Sauve ma sœur » dans le foyer pour donner la parole à celles qui se sont libérées. Leur force et leur courage résonnent dans la scène finale, où Griselda écrit une nouvelle vie. Béatrice Lachaussée
